Piston Liner Scratches

2025-05-22 10:25

Piston / liner scratches caused by foreign particles, like dirt, debris or metal shavings, occur when abrasive foreign bodies in the engine oil or air intake system (or exhaust system) damage the piston surfaces. These particles can scratch, score, or abrade the piston, reducing efficiency and lifespan. This is a common type of engine damage, and they can have serious implications if not addressed.

There are some potential root causes:

▶Contaminated air system:

Dust or sand bypassing a faulty or clogged air filter.

Debris, particles come drop from exhaust pipes / turbo opening.

▶Poor Lubrication:

Dirty oil carrying debris that gets between the piston and cylinder wall.

▶Engine Assembly Debris:

Residual metal shavings or contaminants from engine manufacturing or rebuilds.

▶Worn Components:

Parts like piston rings or valve guides degrading and shedding particles.

Symptoms when there are piston / liner scratches

▶Might be no obvious symptoms in the early stage.

▶Visible vertical scratches or scuff marks on the piston skirt or cylinder wall if checked by endoscope.

▶Engine knocking or increased noise.

▶Loss of compression.

▶Increased oil consumption or blue exhaust smoke.

▶High blowby.

▶Reduced engine output / power.

How to inspection:

▶Remove the cylinder head and inspect the piston crown and skirt.

▶Check for scoring or embedded particles.

▶Inspect air filter and intake path and exhaust passages for signs of damage or breach.

How to prevent:

▶Use high-quality air filters and change them regularly.

▶Perform regular oil and filter changes.

▶Ensure a clean environment during engine rebuilds or repairs.

▶Use proper sealing and assembly practices to avoid introducing debris.

Repair Options:

▶Light scratches: May be honed out, and piston reused if within spec.

▶Deep scoring: May require cylinder boring, oversized pistons, or full piston replacement.

▶Severe damage: Consider engine rebuild or replacement, depending on extent.
