It is primarily caused by a breakdown in the lubrication oil film, often due to high operating temperatures, contamination, or overloading. Key Aspects of Liner Scuffing and Seizure ●Mechanism: When the lubricating oil film fails, asperities (microscopic peaks) on the surfaces of the piston ring and liner rub together, generating intense heat. This causes micro-welding and adhesive wear, creating vertical scratches or scoring. ●Progression: Scuffing is the initial stage, appearing as scuff marks or scoring. If the lubrication is not restored, the increased friction leads to further heat generation, causing the piston to expand, lose clearance, and eventually seize against the liner. ●Causes: ○ Insufficient Lubrication: Low oil pressure, improper lubrication timing, or incorrect oil viscosity. ○ Contamination: Fuel or solid contaminants can break down the oil film. ○ Overheating/Overloading: High temperatures from overload or poor cooling can cause the oil to fail. ○ Improper Clearances: Incorrect piston-to-liner clearance. ●Signs & Symptoms: ○ Engine Noise: Unexpected noise in the engine, such as a tapping sound or a sudden decrease in engine speed. ○ Visual Damage: Vertical scoring marks visible on the piston skirt and liner during inspection. ○ Performance Loss: Reduced engine performance. ●Prevention: ○ Proper, consistent lubrication. ○ Maintaining correct oil temperature and viscosity. ○ Using appropriate piston ring coatings (e.g., chrome) to minimize adhesion. ○ Monitoring engine load and temperature to avoid overheating.
