Benefit Of Cylinder Head Gasket Coating And Main Manufacture And Related Standard

Cylinder head gasket coatings play a critical role in modern diesel and gasoline engines, especially for MLS (Multi-Layer Steel) head gaskets used in high peak cylinder pressure applications. The coating is normally applied onto stainless steel layers or sealing beads to improve sealing reliability, durability, and assembly robustness.

The primary benefit of gasket coating is improved micro-sealing capability. Even highly machined cylinder head and block surfaces contain microscopic waviness and machining marks. Elastomeric coatings such as fluoroelastomer (FKM), nitrile rubber (NBR), or PTFE-based materials deform locally and fill these surface irregularities, preventing combustion gas leakage, coolant seepage, and oil migration.

Another major advantage is compensation for thermal expansion differences. During engine operation, the cylinder head and block experience continuous thermal cycling. The coating provides elasticity and recovery capability that helps maintain sealing stress despite joint movement, vibration, and bolt load relaxation.

The coating also reduces fretting and wear between gasket layers and mating surfaces. This is particularly important in heavy-duty diesel engines where cylinder pressures may exceed 250 bar. Anti-fretting behavior improves long-term sealing durability and prevents surface polishing or oxidation at sealing interfaces.

Corrosion protection is another important function. Coatings isolate stainless steel layers from coolant, combustion condensate, and galvanic interaction with aluminum heads or cast iron blocks. This improves service life in severe environments.

Additionally, coating lowers installation damage risk by reducing metal-to-metal scuffing during cylinder head assembly and torque-down operations.

Major gasket coating and gasket manufacturers include:

• Dana Incorporated (Victor Reinz)

• Tenneco (formerly Federal-Mogul / Payen)

• ElringKlinger

• Nippon Gaskets

• TATSUMI

• Freudenberg Group

• Datwyler

Related industrial standards and validation specifications commonly include:

• ASTM D2000 for elastomer material classification

• ISO 3601 for sealing material evaluation

• DIN 28090 gasket testing principles

• SAE J1223 gasket leakage evaluation

• OEM-specific hot gas and thermal cycling tests

• VDA sealing system durability requirements

Modern gasket coatings are therefore essential for achieving reliable sealing under high combustion pressure, thermal fatigue, and long service intervals in contemporary engines.
