How to Verify a Genuine Long Block

How to Verify a Genuine Long Block Before You Buy.

A buyer's checklist for confirming authenticity, quality, and completeness.

A "long block" is a partly built engine: the block, crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, cylinder head, camshaft, and valvetrain, already assembled. It typically excludes the fuel system, turbocharger, and outside parts like manifolds. Buyers choose a long block to rebuild quickly without starting from bare components, saving both time and labor.

Because a long block is a significant purchase, confirming it is genuine and correctly matched to your engine is essential. Here is how to check before you buy.

Read the Dataplate

Look for the engine model, serial number (ESN), and build code (CPL). These confirm exactly what the engine is and which parts fit — always verify them against your original engine before ordering.

Check Casting Numbers

The block and head carry raised or stamped foundry numbers. Compare them against the correct numbers for that engine model. Mismatched numbers can mean the wrong part was used, even if the listing looks correct.

Inspect the Workmanship

A quality long block shows clean machined surfaces, even bolt torque, and proper markings. Rough casting, poor machining, or ground-off numbers are warning signs worth walking away from.

Confirm What Is Included

Ask the seller for a clear parts list. Is the cylinder head installed or sold bare? Are the pistons and bearings new? A genuine long block should come with a documented build sheet, not just a verbal description.

Request Quality Records

A trusted supplier can provide material certificates, measurement reports, and quality credentials, proving the parts inside meet the correct specifications for your application.

Why Documentation Matters

For buyers, the safest path is working with suppliers who provide full documentation and clear photos. A long block with a known build history holds its value and brings fewer surprises down the road.

For sellers, sharing the dataplate photo, build list, and quality records up front builds trust and reduces returns — a small step that pays off on every transaction.
